She is a passionate animal lover, drawn to both dogs and horses from an early age. In her down time, you can find Helen walking the beautiful Cumbrian fells and spending time with animals of all kinds.
Overseas work
In Australia, Helen started her coaching career as a horse-riding instructor, teaching beginner riders the fundamentals of riding, horse management and safety. Through this she learned the importance of patience and understanding in inspiring confidence in her students to help them achieve their goals. She strives to use these same skills and principles in her dog training.
While in California Helen provided training and advice for clients via The Canine Way. She was also heavily involved at the county animal shelter, Marin Humane. Here she volunteered and was employed in the Behaviour and Training department working with a variety of dogs and clients. Part of her role was to help better prepare the dogs to succeed in their new homes through training, enrichment and behaviour modification. She also taught group classes (Family Dog, Tricks, Specialty Workshops), carried out private training and behaviour consults, worked as a part of the Screen Team which included an initial intake screening of the dogs who arrived at the shelter and working with dogs with a variety of behaviour issues including fear, anxiety and reactivity.
In addition to the above, Helen and her husband volunteer as behaviour foster parents. Providing a loving home for those shelter dogs who need a little extra help to adapt and succeed in their future home. It is such a rewarding thing to do and it also provides Helen with first-hand experience of a variety of problem behaviours. This keeps her active, creative, and always looking for workable solutions to help the dogs and their owner succeed. Go to the Volunteering and Community page for more information.
